French, 'The Quarry', about 1835

About the work

Overview

This view probably shows a quarry in the Forest of Fontainebleau. The artist, thought to be French, has made a study of a scene of trees standing behind a wall of rocks. Both trees and rocks were subjects sketched by landscape artists on the spot. The landscape painter Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes recommended that they be studied both individually and in groups. This study was painted over several sessions and is highly finished. The delicate foliage of the trees was added on top of the sky once it had dried. A brown underlayer is visible in the foreground, for example under the rocks, over which the artist has added strokes in thicker paint in creams, greys and pale browns
