About

Belle Smith leads an immersive session in the first of a four-part series diving into music in art.

The first in the series, Divine harmony, looks at the depiction of singing, music-making angels in Italian altarpieces, and the metaphor for divine harmony, paralleled with the rhythm of colour and line.

While listening to music and studying the instruments depicted, often real instruments of the period, the talk will look to paintings such as 'The Coronation of the Virgin: Central Main Tier Panel' by Jacopo di Cione and workshop and 'The Assumption of the Virgin' by Matteo di Giovanni.

Expect an interesting discussion about musicality in the churches of the period and how this informed art.
