About

This May, the National Gallery turns 200 years old and we are throwing a party!

To mark the occasion, artist Lucie MacGregor has created a giant cake sculpture made from pulped recycled paper. Lucie's design considers the Gallery's rooms and collection as well as the theme of birthdays.

The paper pulp includes recycled elements from birthday cards and National Gallery brochures peeping through the design.

Lucie needs your help to decorate the cake, so taking inspiration from the Gallery, contribute to the moment by adding a drawing or note of your own!

Lucie MacGregor

Lucie MacGregor is an artist and social practitioner from Huddersfield, and now based in London. Moving between sculpture, drawing, ceramics and performance, her artmaking is humorous and multisensorial. She turns electronic waste, paper pulp and other recycled materials into curious formations, so that everyday objects become blurred into slightly mischievous ones. Recent exhibitions include ‘Mermaids’ at Corner 7 Gallery (2023) and in ‘Tethered’ at Unit 2 Gallery in London (2023). She currently facilitates art workshops with young audiences at Dulwich Picture Gallery (2022 - present), AFRIL in Lewisham (2023 - present), Drawing Room (2021-2023), Towner Gallery in Eastbourne (2022-2023) whilst co-facilitating SEN workshops at Camden Art Centre (2021-present).
