Large images of publicly owned artworks will be projected on to the National Gallery on Friday 8 February as part of celebrations marking the completion of Your Paintings – a website showing the entire UK national collection of oil paintings.
The projections will take place between 4.30pm and 10pm and will be viewable from Trafalgar Square. The National Gallery will also feature in a BBC live broadcast at 6pm.
About the projection
The projections are happening simultaneously in 28 cities across the UK. The projection sequences include two National Gallery paintings: Van Gogh’s Sunflowers and Gainsborough’s Mr and Mrs Andrews.
‘Sunflowers’ will be projected onto all UK buildings involved in the promotion, while ‘Mr and Mrs Andrews’ will be projected onto all participating buildings in England. If you are able to come and watch the projections, don’t forget you can see the original ‘Sunflowers’ and ‘Mr and Mrs Andrews’ inside the National Gallery, which is open late on Fridays until 9pm along with talks, live music and bar.

More about Your Paintings
‘Your Paintings’ is a website which aims to show the entire UK national collection of oil paintings, the stories behind the paintings, and where to see them for real.
The UK holds in its galleries and civic buildings over 210,000 oil paintings spanning 600 years of art history. Many of these publicly owned works are in storage or held behind closed doors. Through a joint effort by the BBC, the Public Catalogue Foundation (PCF) and around 3,000 participating collections these paintings are now available online for everyone to enjoy.
Get involved
The public is invited to ‘tag’ paintings on the website, so that future users of the ‘Your Paintings’ website can easily find paintings by subjects, themes and events that interest them.

The tagging process doesn’t require expert knowledge, but those with specialist information on paintings in the collection are invited to contact the Public Catalogue Foundation [External link].
