Contextualising the art collections of Longford Castle

Patronage, Acquisition and Display: Contextualising the Art Collections of Longford Castle during the Long Eighteenth Century

The National Gallery is delighted to announce a new fully-funded PhD studentship in partnership with Birkbeck College, University of London (School of Arts).

Collaborative Doctoral Partnership

Starting in October 2013 as part of the AHRC’s new Collaborative Doctoral Partnership Scheme, the award provides an opportunity to undertake high quality historic research combined with an exceptional opportunity to gain practical work experience within one of the world’s foremost art galleries - leading to a PhD with one of the UK’s leading universities.

Outcomes of the studentship

‘Patronage, Acquisition and Display: Contextualising the Art Collections of Longford Castle during the Long Eighteenth Century’ will research the collecting and patronage of the Radnor Family at Longford Castle during the long eighteenth century. It will draw on both the collection itself and on previously untapped archival material which is largely housed at the Wiltshire and Swindon record office. The National Gallery enjoys a unique relationship with Longford Castle, which has only recently made access to these resources possible.

This project will make a significant contribution to the history of taste, collecting and the country house in the long eighteenth century.

About the Collaborative Doctoral Partnerships

The National Gallery offers a small number of Collaborative Doctoral Partnerships, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and run in partnership with higher education institutions. These studentships focus on specific themes relevant to the Gallery's collection and wider research themes.
