Commissions

Generating monumental new artworks within the fabric of the Gallery’s iconic walls

Since it was founded, the National Gallery Collection has always inspired artists to create new work. Through our commissioning programme, internationally celebrated artists produce large-scale, seminal projects to be presented within the Gallery, becoming a vital part of the fabric of the institution. They create a long-term presence for contemporary art in continuous dialogue with our historic collection and exhibitions, celebrating our masterpieces as an enduring resource for artists.

This programme continues the legacy of artists commissioned to create artworks specifically for the Gallery’s iconic building, including Boris Anrep, Paula Rego, and Bridget Riley.

The British artist Jeremy Deller has been invited to create a new artwork to celebrate the National Gallery’s bicentenary in 2024. See below for more information about the project.
