Rococo to Romanticism

(1700–1800)

Level 2: Rooms 15– 32

The 18th and early 19th centuries were a remarkable period of revolution and change. Displays dedicated to Venice, the ‘Grand Tour’ and painting outdoors reveal the impact of increased travel by artists and collectors. Formal artistic training and public exhibitions lead to both a distinct British style and sparked artistic reactions to Academic painting. These rooms include artists such as Canaletto, Turner, Ingres and Gainsborough.
