Jervis Wegg Notebooks
Archive reference number
Notes on paintings, mostly northern European, in various collections in western Europe and the United States. Wegg would write an entry on a painting, often revising his comments if, for example, the painting was displayed, subsequently sold or reattributed to another artist.
William Henry Jervis Wegg, b. 28 October 1876, d. 13 December 1940; was a barrister and author of 'The Decline of Antwerp under Philip of Spain' and 'Richard pace: A Tudor Diplomat'. Following his death, drawings and paintings from Wegg's collection were sold by Sotheby's on 23 April 1941 and 28 May 1941.
Donated by Arthur W. Rickards, Wegg's cousin and executor, in March 1941, along with a collection of exhibition catalogues; see NG16/290/89. The notebooks formed part of the library and carry old library shelfmarks; they were transferred to the Archive in 2016.
