Correspondence regarding the offer of sale of the 'Colonna Alatarpiece' by Raphael on behalf of Francis II, King of Naples, by Duke de Ripalda. Includes a letter from Montagu Corry, on behalf of Benjamin Disraeli, to W. H. Gregory informing him there are no funds to negotiate the purchase of the picture; a note referencing a deed signed in January 1870 in Paris between the Count de Nieuwekerke, General Director of the Imperial Collections of Art, and the Duke de Ripalda stating the authorities of the Imperial Museum had, from January to the 1st July, the exclusive right of purchasing the picture for £40,000; a letter from J. Williams to Sir William Boxall explaining how, after inspecting the picture, currently at the National Gallery for inspection by the Trustees, he doubts it to be an authentic Raphael; letters from Duke di Ripalda to Sir William Boxall regarding the removal and subsequent continuance of the deposit of the picture in the National Gallery. Includes a letter from William Law of the Treasury Office to the Trustees and Director of the National Gallery responding to a copy of a letter from the Duke de Ripalda, forwarded by Ralph Nicholson Wornum. The offer was declined.
