Photograph: View of Trafalgar Square
Archive reference number
Photograph of a painting by George Henry Andrews, 'A View of Trafalgar Square with Nelson's Column, looking towards the National Gallery and St-Martin's-in-the-Fields'. Signed and dated, oil on panel 57 1/8 x 44 1/4 in. Christie's 'Fine Victorian Pictures, Drawings and Watercolours', sale 14.3.97 Lot 146. In 1841 Nelson's Column was still under construction. The bronze bas reliefs at the base of the column were not completed until 1849, and the lions were finally installed in 1867. Sir Charles Barry's scheme for creating a terrace in front of the National Gallery with two fountains in the square below was executed in 1840; this picture therefore appears to be an artist's impression of how the square would look, once the various improvements were complete. Copy photograph: Christie's. No neg. details.
