Correspondence re P.M. Turner's intended and actual bequest to the Gallery. Includes correspondence with Turner re his intention to bequeath Cotman's 'Silver Birches', 1927; notes by Kenneth Clark, 9 Feb 1934, re removal of codicil to Turner's will bequeathing the Cotman, possibly as a result of 'some obscure grievance against the gallery'; correspondence between Hendy and Turner, 1949, re destiny of pictures in his collection including 'Portrait of a Man' by Carl Fabritius, Gainsborough's 'Mr Plampin' and 'Archduke Albert' by Rubens and re Gallery's purchase of two of his frames; correspondence, 1951 with Messrs Boodle, Hatfield & Co, solicitors to the executors of Turner's will and the Honourable Andrew Shirley, one of the executors re Turner's bequest of 'Mr Plampin' by Gainsborough and 'Portrait of a Man' by Maino subject to certain conditions and acceptance by the Gallery of the Gainsborough only, 1951; correspondence, 1952, with Andrew Shirley re availability of 'Le Guillotiné' by Géricault and 'La Prostituée' by Toulouse-Lautrec under Turner's will [both declined].
