The Barque of Charon

In Greek myth Charon was the boatman who took the souls of the dead across the river Styx to Hades. This is a copy of a picture in the Louvre of about 1735 and the composition also appears in the picture by Subleyras of his studio (Academy, Vienna). This painting has in the past been attributed to Fuseli (1741 - 1825).
