Devise the structure
Devising the story and working on story structure are the next stage of the work. Familiar activities such as creating story boards or story maps, can be used to support the development of story structure. Shared tellings in groups, paired rehearsal and oral drafting can then be used to develop a final text.
Although this may seem like a long lead in to the point where new stories emerge, creating ideas for what might happen in a story can be the most challenging aspect of writing for young writers.
Taking time to explore the ideas that arise from the collaborative exploration of a painting enriches the work and establishes a confident sense of the imagined world that will inform future storytelling and writing.
