About
This immersive studio-based summer school invites you to look more closely at the world around you, and at Van Gogh’s work, to better understand how he translated intense perception into expressive art. Taking inspiration from Van Gogh’s paintings, sketches, and letters, we will investigate how van Gogh’s use of colour, dynamic compositional and cropping choices, and distinctive mark-making and gestures, made everyday subjects appear vibrantly alive on canvas and paper. Building upon Van Gogh’s intentional making practice, we will explore different genres, materials, and subjects, from still lives, to landscapes, to interior scenes
Each day, we will engage in hands-on activities, working with materials such as reed pens and oil paint, to develop a deeper understanding of Van Gogh’s visual language and find ways to adapt it into our own practice. Throughout the three-day summer school, you will learn both in our new state-of-the-art Clore Art Studio as well as in the galleries to observe and draw directly from Van Gogh’s masterpieces.
This summer school is designed for learners and artists of all levels. All materials are provided for the summer school, and you will take your artworks home with you.

Day 1: Colour and composition, and cropping

We will begin the summer school by working directly from floral still life setups inspired by Van Gogh's paintings of irises to explore his innovative use of colour and composition that make ordinary subjects extraordinary. Using a variety of materials, including oil paint, we will focus on colour and cropping throughout the first day.
We will also go into the galleries to directly observe and draw from these principles in Van Gogh’s ‘Sunflowers’ and ‘Two Crabs’.
Day 2: Mark-making and landscapes

On Day 2, we will focus on Van Gogh’s dynamic and unique mark-making technique in both paint and ink. Working from a variety of materials, including Van Gogh’s most beloved reed pens, we will explore the dynamism in his signature and rhythmic mark-making that you can also adapt and bring into your own practice.
Focussing primarily on landscapes, including ‘Landscape with a Ploughman’ and 'A Wheatfield, with Cypresses’, you will learn about line, mark-making, and negative space to render the world around you.
Day 3: Constructing a scene

On Day 3, we will build upon our lessons on colour, line, and composition to create a final work inspired by Van Gogh’s interior scenes such as ‘Van Gogh’s Chair’ and ‘The Bedroom.’
Working from two life models and a staged set up, you will each create your own final composition that incorporates the learnings from the summer school and your own vibrant visual language.
