About
We live in an age of celebrity culture where people are known, not only for their endeavors, but also for their personal lives. Yet this is nothing new. Eighteenth-century Britain saw an explosion of interest in actors, writers and musicians and their lives became material for newspapers, broadsheets and sometimes scurrilous satirical prints.
Join Matthew Morgan to learn more about Mrs Siddons, the greatest tragic actress of her time, and the painting of her by Thomas Gainsborough. Then take part in a discussion about the painting, and what we can learn from it about our current celebrity culture.
This event is a participatory event which encourages discourse and debate with the host and audience in true Salon style. We encourage you take a look at the painting before the event and come prepared with your own point of view.
