Altarpieces with Peter Schade
About
Head of Framing, Peter Schade, leads a fascinating insight into the art of framing.
As part of the May 2025 redisplay at the Gallery, the framing of The San Pier Maggiore Altarpiece by Jacopo di Cione (1370) has been recreated to match the original, very complex, gilded architectural framing structure which houses all 14 panels. Another is the new frame for The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian by Antonio del Pollaiuolo and Piero del Pollaiuolo (1475).
These new frames are part of the Gallery’s long-standing ambition to enhance the impact of the collection, even for those who don’t pay much attention to the frames.
Your host
Originally from Berlin where he trained as a woodcarver, Peter Schade has been working almost exclusively with antique picture frames since he came to London in 1990. Since joining the National Gallery in 2005 as Head of Framing, Peter has been responsible for the re-framing of about 400 paintings of the permanent collection.
