Drawings by the Carracci. A look back at the exhibition held at the Louvre

This Research Seminar offers a curatorial reflection on the recent exhibition ‘The Carracci Drawings: The Making of the Farnese Gallery’, held between November 2025 and February 2026 at the Musée du Louvre in Paris.

The exhibition introduced audiences to the spectacular Renaissance decorated interior of Rome’s Palazzo Farnese, showcasing an extraordinary collection of preparatory drawings made for the Palazzo’s painted gallery produced by the artist Annibale Carraci, his brother Agostino, and their students.

Complementing the show, an accompanying exhibition catalogue aimed to be more exhaustive, publishing the entire body of preparatory drawings made by the Carracci brothers for the Palazzo.

In this talk, the exhibition’s curator, Victor Hundsbuckler, shares his experiences in developing both the exhibition and accompanying catalogue, as well as discussing key issues that shaped both projects.

The seminar will last an hour followed by a drinks reception.

Victor Hundsbuckler is the curator of 17th-century French and Italian drawings at the Louvre. He has recently curated the Louvre’s exhibition on the Carracci’s preparatory drawings for the Farnese Gallery, as well as the accompanying book. In 2022, at the Louvre Abu Dhabi, he curated the exhibition ‘Stories of paper’, and in 2019, at the Louvre in Paris, the exhibition dedicated to the Italian drawings from the Mariette Collection. Prior to 2018, Victor Hundsbuckler was Head of Historical Collections at the Monnaie de Paris, an institution for which he oversaw the design and opening of a new museum inaugurated in 2017. Victor Hundsbuckler is also a Professor at the École du Louvre where he teaches the history of drawing.
