About
Ahead of Mexican guitarist, Morgan Szymanski's, solo recital in the Pigott Theatre, we take a moment to reflect on the striking visuals of Mexico.
In discussion with friend, artist, and photographer, Mike Calderwood, Morgan explores changing landscapes and perspectives alongside figurative and physical points of view, using our current exhibition, 'José María Velasco: A View of Mexico', as an anchor.
Working in Mexico in the 19th century, Velasco was a man of many interests, fascinated by advances in geology, the archaeology of his home country, the study of local flora, and the increasing presence of industrialisation.
The exhibition shares a snippet of how Velasco's paintings captured a unique moment in Mexico's history. In contrast, Mike's work 'Mexico: A Higher Vision', captures the country's modern landscapes in photographs, yet from a similar elevated perspective.
Weaving in his first-hand, personal experiences, Morgan connects these insightful discussions to the evening's performance and music of Mexico.
