Laughter, lively chatter, the rhythmic clatter of tiles, friends old and new, all gathered around the mahjong table: after the success of the first game night, Mahjong Palace are back.
Using 144 mahjong tiles based on Chinese characters and symbols, mahjong is a four-player game of skill, strategy, luck and, most importantly, community.
Often likened to the Western card game rummy, Mahjong Palace will host an evening teaching the game according to Hong Kong rules. Teachers will be on hand to guide you through your first game or challenge you on your next!
Drinks and other snacks will also be available to order.
Mahjong Palace
Founded in New York City in September 2024 by Subhas Kim Kandasamy, who grew up playing mahjong in Singapore, Mahjong Palace is a social mahjong club that reimagines the mahjong experience.
In a world increasingly focused on individual pursuits, Mahjong Palace is committed to rekindling a spirit of community. Our goal is to create an environment where people can meet - free from apps or screens - and embrace genuine human interaction again.
Mahjong Palace has hosted events at Studio Ashby (London), The Roof Gardens (London), Macao Trading Co (NYC), Nine Orchard (NYC), Yale Club (NYC) and featured in the 'Financial Times'.
All events are designed to cater to mahjong players of all levels.
What to expect
There will be two types of play/tables open throughout the evening. You can choose on arrival. There is limited space so please expect an element of rotation and teachers will be available to all.
Teaching tables: Perfect for absolute beginners, teaching tables are led by experienced teachers. New players are welcome and these tables are for those who want to improve their confidence and understanding of the rules and structure of the game.
Open play tables: Players who are at least comfortable playing Chicken Hand independently are welcome at an open play table. We aim to group participants with others at a similar skill level to ensure a balanced and enjoyable game.
Players will be contacted ahead of the evening to provide their choice of table.
