This essay is a summary of the documented conservation history of these two recently acquired pictures. The authors present an overview of the meticulous photographic and written documentation recorded by Stanley Kennedy North, who undertook conservation treatment of Diana and Actaeon and Diana and Callisto in 1931–2. His pioneering, evidence-based approach to the conservation and care of pictures is acknowledged, but the authors also take account of later assessments of the paintings’ condition, leading up to the most recent treatment in 1998. This is particularly helpful to our understanding of the present appearance of these great paintings.
