This central panel forms part of a triptych, which was probably commissioned from Memling in Bruges by Sir John Donne of Kidwelly, a Welshman resident in Calais, in the late 1470s.
The central panel shows Sir John Donne accompanied by Saint Catherine, kneeling in adoration to the Virgin and Child, while Saint Barbara accompanies Lady Donne and their daughter.
The triptych has left- and right-hand shutters showing Sir John Donne's name saints, Saint John the Baptist and Saint John the Evangelist.
