Foppa was a Brescian. He lived in Pavia from about 1456 to 1490, and thereafter in Brescia, although frequently absent on journeys. He may have trained with
Squarcione and been influenced by Jacopo Bellini and
Gentile da Fabriano.
He was the leading painter in Lombardy, and did much work for the Dukes of Milan, until
Leonardo da Vinci arrived and transformed Milanese painting.
