Permitted materials for sketching in the galleries

Glues / adhesives

  • Most dry pressure-sensitive adhesives adhesive tabs and tapes, e.g. Magic® tape (seek advice) Medium or hard charcoal
  • Conté crayons (no softer than 2B)
  • Watercolour pencils
  • Pencils, crayons in their case
  • Graphite sticks
  • Ballpoint and Biro pens
  • Non-permanent felt-tips
  • Fountain pens – integral reservoir

Stationary type items

  • Erasers (blocks)
  • Barrel sharpeners (that collect sharpenings)
  • Plastic rulers (up to 30 cm)
  • Hole punches Pins (drawing/brass split)
  • String and thread
  • Scissors (small, round ended)
  • Stapler and staples (boxed)
  • Needles and cotton
  • Card and paper (sheets, small rolls)
  • Paper clips

Modelling materials and tools

  • Dry modelling materials/ clay / Plasticine type
  • Small modelling/ carving /craft tools (blunt only)

Permitted painting materials only for copyists with current permits

Paints

  • Tubed oil paint
  • Tubed acrylic paint
  • Tubed watercolour paint
  • Tubed gouache paint
  • Watercolour paint - dry blocks

Solvents

  • White spirit (up to 100 ml)*
  • Turpentine (up to 100 ml)*
  • Water (up to 100 ml in a plastic bottle with lid)*

*The solvent container/bottle must have a lid, must be kept closed at all times, and must be labelled with the appropriate hazard warning sticker that conforms with Health and safety regulations.
