Abstract

This article deals with a late altarpiece on panel in the National Gallery by Pietro Perugino, The Virgin and Child with Saints Jerome and Francis, otherwise known as ‘The Madonna di Loreto’. The picture is a documented commission completed in 1507, destined for the church of Santa Maria dei Servi in Perugia.

‘The Madonna di Loreto’ was cleaned and restored in 2002–2004 and a number of aspects of the altarpiece are described: the subject; the circumstances of the commission; the cost of the altarpiece in relation to other documented commissions from the Perugino workshop; the materials and technique; infrared and X-ray examination and Perugino’s reuse of cartoons in the design; the conservation history of the panel; and analysis of surface coatings applied at various stages of the painting’s history. The rediscovery of the original frame in Perugia is reported.
