The Technique of a 'Tüchlein' by Quinten Massys

Abstract

'Tüchlein', a glue tempera medium on linen, is an early Netherlandish technique used for The Virgin and Child with Saints Barbara and Catherine, attributed to Quinten Massys. Technical examinations disclosed an animal glue medium, linen fibre, and lack of a conventional ground. Infrared photographs showed an underdrawing and black underpaint. The painting is compared to Dieric Bouts's Entombment, executed in the same technique.
