Description
Copy record of a letter from Charles Gerald Agnew to Colin George Agnew regarding restoration and shipping to New York of a painting by [Bartolomeo] Montagna alongside Master Thornhill by George Romney. The letter also details delays in settling business between the firm of Duveen and Albert Spencer, 7th Earl Spencer and apparent money troubles suffered by Joseph Duveen, Agnew's bidding at auction for various works, discussions with Calouste Gulbenkian and a Veronese painting damaged during shipping.
The letter also discusses the acquisition at auction by the National Gallery of 'A Young Man in a Fur Cap and a Cuirass' by Carel Fabritius. Agnew notes his opinion that having not warned possible buyers of its interest, the National Gallery has overpaid for the painting.
