The Pool
Studio of Gustave Courbet

The scene may depict the upper part of the Gorges de Chauderon, above Montreux in Switzerland. This identification is supported by an old label on the back of the canvas.

Courbet collaborated with numerous pupils, especially in his later years, and he often finished or signed their work, as is probably the case with this picture.
