Supports

The support of a painting is the object or material on which the work has been executed. Paintings in oil and tempera have been produced on a number of different supports, including wooden panels, canvas and copper. Different supports have to be prepared in different ways before paint can be applied.

Wooden panels are usually prepared with a layer of gesso to create a smooth surface for the paint. Works on copper usually have an enamel-like finish.
