Joachim von Sandrart

Joachim von Sandrart (1606 - 1688) was a German painter and writer who is now chiefly remembered for his book 'Teutsche Academie der Edlen Bau-, Bild- and Mahlerey- Kunste' (The German Academy of the noble arts of Architecture, Sculpture and Painting) (2 volumes, 1675 and 1679), an art-historical work which is an important source of information about 17th-century painters.

Sandrart studied in Utrecht under Honthorst and then travelled to London and Italy. He spent a number of years, from 1637 to about 1645, in Amsterdam before founding the Academy for Painting in Nuremberg in 1674. He met a number of famous painters about whom he wrote, including Poussin and Claude, with whom he sketched outside Rome.
