Beatus (meaning blessed) was the name given to someone in the first stage of being made a saint before canonisation.
A blessed figure is often distinguished in Italian art by an aureole of rays rather than a halo. In Fra Angelico's predella of the 'Last Judgement' the saints and the blessed are so distinguished; they are also in separate compartments.
