NG Citizens: Session Five

28 March 2026

Over 50 people from across the four nations of the UK have now completed the first stage of their journey as part of the NG Citizens Assembly.

Over five months, Assembly Members came together through a series of workshops, discussions and collaborative sessions, to explore one central question:

What do you want from the UK’s National Gallery, and how can it bring people and paintings together in authentic and meaningful ways, now and in the future?

In the final session, Assembly Members shared a final overarching Vision Statement alongside eight guiding Principles. These were presented to the Director, Sir Gabriele Finaldi, members of the Executive Team, representatives from DCMS, policymakers and stakeholders from across the sector, marking an important milestone in the project.

A full report of the Assembly's findings will be published later this Spring.

Looking ahead, a Citizens Panel of more than 20 volunteers will be established in the autumn. Meeting three times a year, the Panel will work with Gallery staff to co-create, review progress against the Assembly’s recommendations, and help shape the Gallery’s work through to the 2029/30 financial year.

NG Citizens forms a key part of the Gallery’s Audience Strategy and 10-year vision, helping to ensure that its future is shaped not only for audiences, but with them.
