Glass Mosaics
We looked at the painting through viewfinders and drew the details we could see. We then found out that Venice is famous for glassmaking. With the help of a local artist Genevieve Thompson, we turned our painting details into beautiful fused-glass mosaics.

Golden Wands
When looking at one of the buildings, one child said, 'I think the spiky things are wands', which inspired the direction of our project. We visited the woods to collect sticks and decorated them with sponge, wire and beads before spraying them gold to create our wands.

Animal Figureheads
We noticed the beautiful figureheads (sculptures) on the front of the parade boats. We decided to make animal versions, with each animal representing a different value — such as a lion for bravery, a horse for strength and a bird for freedom.

Dragon!
The colourful regatta boats reminded our pupils of dragons they had seen at Chinese New Year. Both events are big celebrations with lots of decorations. We decided to create our own dragon for the Venice Regatta using balloons and papier-mâché.

A Plume of Feathers
We were inspired by the feather umbrellas in the painting. We experimented with different mediums to create our own feathers including pencils, poster paints, pastels and watercolours. We then each chose our favourite medium to create a feather for the collective plume.
