Hill View Junior Academy, Sunderland, ages 8–9
Banners
We created our own banner, inspired by the banners hanging in Canaletto’s painting and the Durham Miners’ Gala banners. We used a traditional batik technique to create images of our local community, showcasing that it is anything but ‘grim up North!’
Prestbury C E Primary School, Macclesfield, ages 5–7
Printed Flags
We thought that the fabrics hanging from the windows might have been flags to cheer on the racers! We had a visit from Macclesfield Silk Museum who showed us materials and patterns to inspire our own flag designs. We then printed our designs onto fabric.
Outwood Primary Academy Alne, Yorkshire, ages 7–9
Celebration Banners
We noticed the celebratory banners hanging from the windows. We thought about which events we like to celebrate and decided to make banners for them. We chose birthdays, weddings and Christmas, and decorated our banners using our drawing, painting and sewing skills.
Morley Memorial Primary School, Cambridge, ages 7–8
Trophy and Medals
Our class began by pitching ideas for the project before voting for their favourite. The most popular idea was to make a trophy and medals for the winning regatta team. The children took inspiration from their own medals which they brought into school to show the class.
Preston Park Primary School, Wembley, ages 8–9
Festival on Water
After thinking about different celebrations, children in Year 4 decided to create their own festival on water. They made a gondola and directed each other to pose for photographs inside it. Each pose shows a different activity or conversation taking place at the festival.
