Buildings

The tall buildings around the canal caught the imagination of these children

Building

Mab’s Cross Community Primary School, Wigan, ages 5–6

A House of the Future

After noticing that the buildings look like they are floating on water, we learned about flooding in Venice and links to climate change. We designed a ‘House of the Future’ from materials that could float, to help Venice cope with rising water levels.

Moorlands Junior School, Cheshire, ages 8–9

Lino Print Frieze

Children in our class recognised that the painting shows Venice. It was the grand buildings and canal that gave it away! We decided to make lino prints of individual buildings and their reflections in the canal, before joining them together in a long frieze.

Hill Top C of E Primary School and Nursery, Bradford, ages 7–8

Our Own Islands – Made with Teamwork

One of our students said, 'I want to know how the Island got there.' We learned that Venice was built on strong stilts driven into the bed of a lagoon. We worked as a team to build our own floating islands, complete with shops, transport, houses and a farm.

Luton Primary School, Kent, ages 6–7

Our Class Building

Our class focused on the architecture in the painting. We created a collaborative building, with each child designing a window into their own world. They explored different patterns and rhythms in a celebratory way, inspired by the artwork.
