KS3–5: Printing pre-digital

Learn how artists printed 400 years ago by trying it for yourself. Students are introduced to a range or printing techniques and, taking inspiration from the collection, will create their own print using an etching press. 

Suitable for: KS3–5

Duration: 3.5 hours (including use of lunch room for 30 minutes)

KS3–5: Making colour

Create paint from scratch and experiment with pigments in a study day which increases proficiency in handling materials as such as gold leaf and egg tempera.

KS3–5: Portraiture from preparation to paint

Learn to create a portrait step-by-step by investigating a selection of portraits from the 1400s to 1700s.

This study day increases critical thinking and proficiency in handling acrylic paint and painting on canvas.

KS3–5: Messengers

Explore colour, light and shape in this 90-minute practical workshop which will be tailored to your key stage.

Students will look at the Bridget Riley wall painting, Messengers, and connected works, experimenting with different ways of looking, drawing and using colour.

The session could be a good starting point for projects back in the classroom.

Duration: 1.5 hours (no lunch room provided)

Workshops for students with SEND

All our workshops can be adapted for students with additional needs but our Explore it! and Sense it! sessions allow for greater flexibility and co-planning with group leaders.

MLD and SLD students: Explore it!

A specially tailored programme for students with Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD) and Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), which has been developed in consultation with teachers and specialist practitioners.
 
Sessions consist of a pre-visit to the school followed by a tailor-made gallery-based session designed to match students’ needs.

During their visit to the National Gallery, students will explore a single painting through their senses, and investigate how it was made in a practical workshop. The Gallery sessions are multi-sensory, incorporating drama and custom-designed resources and props to enhance the students’ experience.

PMLD students: Sense it!

A multi-sensory workshop for students with PMLD (profound and multiple learning disabilities) and their staff.
 
Experience the sounds and spaces, smells, colours and light at the National Gallery. During your visit, take time to explore a single painting through the senses, and investigate how it was made in a practical workshop.
 
Following a visit to the school from the Gallery Educators, we will provide a tailor-made Gallery session to match the students’ needs. They will have the exclusive use of the Pigott Education Centre and suitably equipped private spaces (Learning Gallery, Changing room, hoist, disabled parking, etc.).

  • We require a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice of date and a time frame for your session to be provided in the booking form
  • For each group of 10-30 pupils, we require the lead teacher’s name, email address and mobile number.

You can book more than one group in a single booking request. Groups can differ by key stage, theme, date and time of their visit. There is a maximum of 4 groups per date.

Please let us know 21 days prior to your session. Cancellations made with less than 21 days’ notice and no-shows will incur a charge.

All of the above themes can be adapted for SEND groups, but out Explore it! and Sense it! sessions (please see above) allow for greater flexibility and co-planning with group leaders.
