The architectural history of the British art gallery
As we come to the end of our Bicentenary year, architectural editor John Goodall reflects on 200 years of the National Gallery, and public art galleries more widely
About
The design of public art galleries developed from the presentation of paintings and sculpture in aristocratic collections. This talk looks at the early development of this specialist architectural form in Britain and the remarkable story of the National Gallery itself, which moved by stages from its foundation 200 years ago in a private town house on Pall Mall, to become the sole occupant of a building that dominates Trafalgar Square.
John Goodall is the architectural editor of Country Life
