Art On Your Doorstep

The National Gallery is coming to you

Life-size reproductions of masterpieces from the National Gallery will be coming to outdoor sites across the UK.

New partners of the new national touring project, The National Gallery: Art On Your Doorstep, are announced today. Organisations across the UK will share paintings from the nation’s collection with communities beyond Trafalgar Square.

Over the course of three years, the Gallery will be reaching all four nations of the UK, working with a total of 12 partners. For the second year of the project, we will be partnering with Oakwell Hall and Country Park in Kirklees, Isle of Wight Council in partnership with Shaping Newport on the Isle of Wight, and Creative Mile: Brentford Art Trail. These exhibitions will run from 1 April 2026 to 14 February 2027

Up to 30 printed reproductions of masterpieces from the National Gallery will be exhibited in local communities.

Each painting will be reproduced life-size, in fine detail and in its frame, allowing visitors the chance to look closely and discover hidden details. Outdoors and free to view, these exhibitions will entwine art with the everyday.

Each exhibition will not only be displayed across the local community but also be shaped by its people, landmarks, and cultural spaces.

Community groups in Kirklees have collaborated with Huddersfield Art Gallery with works selected to complement the landscape and connect with historical stories. The displays will be accompanied by a programme of performances, tours and talks.

In Newport on the Isle of Wight, the Council, in partnership with Shaping Newport, will be working closely with local arts charity, Independent Arts, to deliver associated workshops and projects and engage with the community at their Creative Hub.

And finally, Creative Mile, Brentford Art Trail will work with the National Gallery to place up to 30 paintings connecting to the theme of love in unexpected places, encouraging visitors to understand the artistic heritage of the area.

Phase two follows the success of 'Art On Your Doorstep' in Stoke-on-Trent, where the project showed the impact of bringing reproductions into the everyday. Dr Samatha Howard, Curator of Arts at The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery, said: ‘Soon after its opening, the ‘Art On Your Doorstep’ exhibition in Bethesda Gardens quickly became a popular meeting place over the summer months. Rarely did a day pass without people stopping to view the artworks displayed throughout the gardens, often while meeting for lunch. The exhibition clearly helped to create an inviting and welcoming atmosphere within the space.’

This momentum continues across the remaining Year One locations in Croydon, Torquay and Derry/Londonderry. Reflecting on the exhibition in Croydon, which opened on 26 January 2026, Hannah Widgington, Exhibitions Manager at the National Gallery, said: ‘The trail offered a rare chance to encounter these works beyond the familiar Gallery walls and weaves them into everyday life. Local residents have helped select the artworks featured on the trail and will contribute their own creative responses to form the Croydon Masterpiece - a testament to the borough’s imagination, pride, and artistic energy.’

By presenting life-size reproductions of masterpieces in public parks, high streets and community spaces, 'Art On Your Doorstep' builds on where and how people can encounter art. Developed in collaboration with local partners and shaped by community voices, the project continues to celebrate the creativity and identity of places across the UK, bringing people and paintings together in shared everyday spaces.

Oakwell Hall and Country Park, Kirklees

The 14 paintings of 'Art On Your Doorstep' spread around Oakwell Hall and Country Park are selected to complement the landscape and connect with historical stories. The labels near the paintings are co-authored by The National Gallery, Huddersfield Art Gallery staff, and local community groups: Batley High School for Girls, Ravenshall School, and Friday Wanderers - a women’s walking group, Dewsbury. These different voices represent a value shared by both Gallery partners, that art is for everyone to enjoy.

Since 2020, Huddersfield Art Gallery building has been closed. This is due to the creation of new museum and art gallery in Huddersfield town centre, as part of ‘Our Cultural Heart’ a multimillion investment in culture in our region. Since closing the building, Huddersfield Gallery has partnered with many organisations delivering an exciting exhibition programme, with works from the Kirklees collection and contemporary artists in a range of venues including Yorkshire Artspace (Sheffield), Sovereign Design House (University of Huddersfield Campus), Huddersfield Art Gallery: Unit 7, Tolson Museum (Huddersfield), Dewsbury Town Hall, and Oakwell Hall. Partnering with The National Gallery brings art from the national collections to your doorstep.

Newport, Isle of Wight

Newport’s Art On Your Doorstep exhibition is a town-wide trail bringing 18 National Gallery reproductions into public spaces, encouraging residents and visitors to explore the town. The paintings that make up Newport’s Art On Your Doorstep trail have been selected by community groups and a local school based on place, with many of the reproductions reflecting the beauty and motifs of their physical location.

The trail spans Newport’s key heritage areas, taking visitors through the town centre, along four of its traditional alleyways, across its historic squares and right down to the harbourside, encouraging deeper exploration of the Isle of Wight’s historic county town. An updated town map has been produced by a local artist to show the trail in full, and visitors can follow the route without needing to climb any steps, making it fully accessible.

The Isle of Wight Council has secured the trail through the Shaping Newport partnership. This sees the council, Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council and the Newport Business Association work collaboratively to improve the experience for residents and visitors in Newport. It aims to change the town for the better by acting on feedback from over 3000 residents about the Island’s historic county town.
