Bag sizes permitted in the National Gallery

For reasons of security and safety the National Gallery introduced a new bag size policy at the end of July 2012.

  • Maximum bag size allowed in the building is 43 x 66 cm (17 x 26 inches)
  • Visitors will not be allowed to carry bags on their backs

Cloakrooms

  • Maximum bag size allowed in the cloakrooms is 43 x 66 cm (17 x 26 inches). Larger items will not be accepted

Exceptions

  • Visitors only accessing the Sainsbury Wing Shop from Whitcomb Street
  • Visitors only accessing the National Café from St. Martin's Place
  • Baby buggies and over-size bags containing necessary medical equipment, or for use in nursing and baby care, will be permitted, subject to the owners agreeing that these items may be searched on exiting the Gallery
