A Torrent at Tivoli

about 1789-93, Simon Denis

The Gere Collection, on long-term loan to the National Gallery, © Private collection 2000. Used by permission
Denis painted this sketch while visiting the falls at Tivoli, probably in the early 1790s when he also painted the 'View of the Cascades at Tivoli'. Such sketches may have been made as studies for larger paintings or simply as studies for their own sake. Denis captures the effects of the foaming water gushing over rocks, its translucency and the shadows beneath its surface.
