Jan van de Velde was an Amsterdam artist who specialised in still life. He painted simple compositions in the manner of Pieter Claesz. and Willem Heda of Haarlem. This arrangement of glass, oysters and lemons is a characteristic example of his work. The green goblet is a Rhenish wine glass or 'roemer'.
