Giovanni Mocenigo was Doge of Venice from 1478 until 1485. The Doge's banner shows the Mocenigo arms and the lion of Saint Mark (the emblem of Venice) and is inscribed: 'pax/ tibi/ mar/ce /eva/ngel/ista /mevs' (Peace be with you Mark my evangelist). The altar also shows the Mocenigo arms, and is inscribed.
The Christ Child is shown twice, once held by the Virgin, once by Saint Christopher.
This work was traditionally ascribed to Carpaccio.
