A humanist, in art-historical terms, is a student of Greek and Roman literature and antiquities. The interest in the ancient world and appropriation of ideas from it, which took place particularly in Italy in the 15th century, paved the way for the Renaissance (see the entries for Early Renaissance and the High Renaissance).
