Highlights

The area where light is most brilliantly reflected back towards the eye of the viewer is called the highlight; it normally appears white.

When a painter attempts to duplicate visual phenomena pictorially, it is often necessary to include highlights. They are most frequently seen on shiny materials, for example armour and glass. Painting certain objects, such as glass vases, has become recognised as a test of the technical skill of the artist.
