An adjective used to describe artists who sought to imitate Caravaggio’s stylistic innovations, in particular his naturalistic approach to painting and use of dramatic lighting effects (known as chiaroscuro). The term may equally be applied to paintings displaying these characteristics or, more generally, to the style adopted by artists who sought to emulate Caravaggio’s methods.
