Cameos are miniature reliefs cut from a material with at least two distinct layers. The materials employed were originally hardstones such as sardonyx but shells were later favoured. The cutting of cameos was first perfected in the Hellenistic kingdoms and was much prized at the Roman Imperial courts. Hardstone cameos have always been among the most highly valued of all works of art.
