The distant row of rooftops suggests that this small garden may be on the outskirts of Montmartre, where Boldini lived for several years. The garden has attracted a visitor; with a few brushstrokes the artist suggests the presence of a woman, dressed in black and wearing a hat, sitting by a flower bed and turning her head to examine a bloom.
