A celebration of major Impressionist paintings from The Courtauld Gallery.

'Courtauld Impressionists: From Manet to Cézanne' traces the development of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings through a selection of over forty masterpieces.

Enjoy highlights from The Courtauld Gallery, including famous works by Cézanne, Toulouse-Lautrec, Renoir, Manet, and Seurat alongside a selection of much-loved Impressionist paintings from the Gallery’s own holdings.

This exhibition is a collaboration between the National Gallery and The Courtauld Gallery.

Paul Gauguin

'Te Rerioa'

1897

Gauguin’s retreats to the Pacific Islands gave rise to some of his most recognisable works. This monumental canvas, set in a fictive, dream-like space, is dominated by two Tahitian women watching over a sleeping child.

Paul Cézanne

'Pot of Primroses and Fruit'

about 1888–90

Cézanne’s still lifes present complex interplays of form, space and colour. He was often deterred from painting cut flowers, which would wilt during the course of his lengthy studies. Here, he instead opts for a potted Chinese primrose.

Hilaire-Germain-Edgar Degas

'Two Dancers on a Stage'

1874

Degas had a lifelong passion for the ballet. His many paintings of dancers form explorations of movement and space. Here, two ballerinas interact as they perform against an elaborate backdrop at the Paris opera.

Edouard Manet

'Banks of the Seine at Argenteuil'

1874

Edouard Manet painted this during a visit to Claude Monet in Argenteuil in the summer of 1874. Working en plein air, Manet here experiments with the Impressionist technique. He captures the effect of light dancing across the rippling water using short strokes of white and vivid blue.
