Brown and Black Organic Glazes, Pigments and Paints

Raymond White
Technical Bulletin Volume 10, 1986

Abstract

Deals with the analysis of organic brown and black pigments and binders used in paintings, excluding all 20th-century materials and the late 19th-century synthetic coal tar dyestuffs. Source materials discussed occur naturally or are directly derived from animal and vegetable sources by human or geological agencies. Various analytical methods were used.

Because little information has been available regarding these materials, firm analytical results regarding their complex chemistry are presented. Provenance is also given for the materials and they are placed in their historic context.
