Description

Thanks his correspondent for sending a copy of 'Cabinet of Modern Art: The Life of Robert'. He is pleased to receive it as he knew Robert. Eastlake comments that biographies of deceased artists are a 'fitter and safer subject than that of living ones'. He offers to provide one of his paintings for the recipient to engrave, suggesting 'The Martyr', currently belonging to Lord Tankerville, given that a 'banditti' subject owned by Mr Banks of Leeds is no longer free 'being now in the hands of an engraver'. Eastlake mentions two more 'banditti' subjects, one belonging to Sir W.W. Wynne, the other presumably now with the descendants of the former owner Sir George Beaumont.

Purchased from Goodspeed's, Boston, Aug 1974.
