Description
Updates Smirke, who has retired from the Royal Academy due to ill health, on events there, including the news that Eastlake has 'succeeded to the President's chair'. He confesses that 'I look, not without anxiety at the difficulties that are before me, but the die is now case & I must cheerfully endeavour to do my best'. He notes he is about to invite members of the Academy to his home. Eastlake wishes him a healthy new year and that 'the Academy may again enjoy the benefit of your counsel & its members the pleasure of your society'.
